Set Fitness Resolutions You Will Actually Keep

The New Year is here. Are you ready to make 2017 your fittest, healthiest year yet? If so, you’ve probably set weight loss or fitness resolutions. And sure, New Year’s resolutions can help you make positive change. But they’re also notoriously difficult to keep. Almost impossible, in fact.

Hard to keep, yes. But also incredibly popular. The most common New Year’s resolutions are:

  • Save Money
  • Lose Weight
  • Quit Smoking
  • Get More Exercise

Three of the four are health and fitness related. It’s a topic that’s on most people’s minds. What makes these resolutions so hard to keep?

You get overly ambitious. You set a huge, unrealistic dream goal and then speed towards it with everything you’ve got.

For a week. Maybe two weeks. Maybe even a month.

But pretty soon, your brief spurt of momentum has died and your back to your old, unhealthy habits.

Change the cycle. Make a change this year. Use these tips to set small fitness resolutions. They may not be spectacular, but they are reachable and beneficial for your long term health. 

Eat Fruits/Vegetables with Every Meal

This can replace the vague resolution to “eat better” or to “eat more vegetables.” This is simple, straightforward, and actionable. Here’s how to make it work for you:

  • Think of the meals you’re most likely to skip vegetables and fruits at. Then plan ahead to include at least one serving. 
  • Find easy recipes online. Don’t make thing complicated. Salad, steamed veggies, or fresh fruit don’t need to be dressed up in elaborate sauces and spices. That’s fine from time to time, but it’s not realistic to try something totally new at each meal.
  • Make a shopping list and make sure you’ve always got your favorite fruits and vegetables in the house. 

Hit the Gym 3x Per Week

This is not a far off, unreachable goal. Even busy people with full schedules can slip in three trips to the gym each week. So don’t just say, “I want to workout more.” Make your goal clear, easy to follow, and actionable.

The American Psychological Association agrees. To make your New Year’s Resolution stick, they recommend starting small. If your workouts were minimal during 2016, plan for three days at the gym during 2017. Not six or seven. 

What if you already do this? Step up your routine to four or five times per week. Or set a goal weight to reach on specific lifts.
